What is the Reliable Replacement Warhead?

The Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW) Program is a congressionally created plan “for improving the long-term safety, reliability, and security of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile.” RRW was adopted by Congress to reduce the need to return to full-scale nuclear weapons testing and facilitate deep cuts to the stockpile.

In contrast to Congress’s vision, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) sees RRW as an opportunity to create new designs for new military missions.

RRW is a “nukes forever” program, which violates the mandate to disarm nuclear stockpiles under the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
