The House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee approved their spending bill for FY 2008, today, dealing with funding for most of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability's main issues.

The information that has been made public so far - official figures have not yet been released - indicate that no funding was approved for the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW) program.  There will be deep cuts to the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) and plutonium mixed-oxide (MOX) fuel program.  There are indications that environmental cleanup money will be restored to previously underfunded Department of Energy (DOE) sites.

Subcommittee Chairman Pete Visclosky (D-IN) was highly critical of DOE's history of poor project management and priorities in his statement.

ANA is very encouraged by this news and hopes to see the cuts to the nuclear weapons and energy programs and increases to environmental cleanup survive the full budget process.

Here are some specifics:The House E&W criticized DOE's prioritization of new weapons over environmental cleanup.
$0 for RRW (DOE request: $88.7 million)
$120 million for GNEP (DOE request: $405 million)
$168 million for MOX (DOE request: $393.8 million)
