To the Editor:
Now is the time for the public to comment on the Department of Energy’s $150 billion proposal to rebuild the US nuclear weapons production complex. Called “Complex Transformation,” this plan is intended to upgrade the massive industrial infrastructure needed to build new generations of atomic bombs.
It doesn’t make sense that the strongest conventionally armed nation on earth says to the world that we need nuclear weapons, while at the same time telling other countries that they should not have such weapons.
Congress has mandated that the role of nuclear weapons in our nation’s military strategy be studied and updated. And how will we satisfy our Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty obligations to get rid of our nuclear weapons?
Shouldn’t we get these answers before starting such a provocative, expensive and dangerous new project?
The public comment period is open until April 10, 2008.

Your oral comments should be a summary of your major concerns, emphasizing and explaining the most important points. It is a good idea to write down what you plan to say. You should also submit comments in written form. The Department of Energy (DOE) is required to consider both written and oral comments but written are probably more effective in terms of a paper trail. You may hear others comments and want to incorporate theirs into your own when you submit your written comments.

New Mexico May Be the Dump for DOE’s Catch-all Category of Radioactive Wastes The United States has a lot of nuclear waste that we don’t know what to do with. For one type of waste, the Department of Energy (DOE) proposed solution is sadly, once again, to bury it in the ground -- perhaps in New Mexico. After 20 years of essentially ignoring “Greater Than Class C” (GTCC) waste, DOE is now giving the public a chance to comment on its disposal plans.

Should the U.S. rebuild nuclear weapons back to Cold War levels?
The U.S. wants to get back in the nuclear weapons business, but we are not going to let them. The Department of Energy recently released a Notice of Intent for the massive renovation of the nuclear weapons complex. Under the DOE’s plan, “Complex 2030,” the U.S. would have the ability to produce up to 125 nuclear weapons per year – a level comparable to what we had during the Cold War.
It’s not everyday that the U.S. government invites us to tell them exactly what we think of the nuclear weapons complex. But on November 9, 2006, you will have a chance to do just that.
