WHAT: News briefing to release Nuclear Reality Check$: The U.S. Department of Energy’s Most Dangerous, Budget Busting Proposals, a new report analyzing reactor subsidy, weapons production and clean-up projects characterized by major environmental and safety dangers as well as mammoth cost overruns.
WHEN: Monday, April 4, 2011 - - 9:30am
WHERE: National Press Club – Zenger Room, 529 14th St. N.W., Washington, DC
WHO: Leaders of the Alliance for Nuclear Accountability (ANA) a national network of organizations representing the concerns of people living downwind and downstream from U.S. nuclear research, testing, production and waste disposal facilities
- Michele Boyd, Director, Safe Energy Program, Physicians for Social Responsibility – multi-billion dollar federal loan guarantees for new nuclear reactors, an investment the private sector viewed as too risky even before the disasters at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi facility.
- Tom Clements, Southeastern Nuclear Campaign Coordinator, Friends of the Earth – environmental, safety and budget threats by DOE’s proposed use of dangerous mixed-oxide (MOX) plutonium reactor fuel, as confirmed by MOX contamination at the Daiichi 3 reactor.
- Susan Gordon, Director, Alliance for Nuclear Accountability – construction of huge, new, nuclear weapons production plants and warhead redesign projects, which are far over budget, many years behind schedule, and threaten U.S. global non-proliferation goals.
- Tom Carpenter, Executive Director, Hanford Challenge – underfunding radioactive contamination clean-up projects, while mismanaging construction of high-risk facilities like the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant, which is now 240% over-budget and a decade late.
WHY: Scores of activists from across the nation will present their concerns about U.S. nuclear weapons, cleanup and reactor spending policies in dozens of meetings with leaders of Congress and the Obama Administration from April 4 through April 6 as part of ANA’s 23rd Annual DC Days. * * * Also, on Tuesday April 5 at 6:00pm, ANA will host an Awards Reception honoring leaders in the movement for more responsible nuclear policies. Awardees include U.S. Senator John Kerry, whistleblower Walter Tamosaitis, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom activist Carol Urner, and Chernobyl accident cleanup leader Natalia Mansurova. The event will take place at the Mott House, 122 Maryland Ave. N.E, Washington, DC.
