OPPOSE THE GLOBAL NUCLEAR ENERGY PARTNERSHIP
Send a message to the Department of Energy (DOE) opposing the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP), which intends to restart reprocessing nuclear waste in the United States. In 2007, more than 14,000 comments were submitted opposing GNEP - the second most in DOE history! Be part of a growing movement to prevent nuclear reprocessing.
Reprocessing, which is the fundamental link between a nuclear reactor and a plutonium bomb, is the extraction of weapons-usable plutonium from nuclear waste. It is costly (a bailout-sized $700 billion!), ill-conceived, dangerous, and environmentally damaging. DOE wants to use this plutonium in nuclear reactors that wonít be built for decades!
As required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), the Department of Energy has released a Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement and must consider comments from the public. This November, hearings will be held throughout the country giving you the opportunity to comment on GNEP. In 2007, more than 2,500 people attended these hearings and submitted 550 oral comments! Tell the Energy Department that you oppose reprocessing radioactive waste!
