What is a PEIS?
The Global Nuclear Energy Partnership proposal
document is a Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (PEIS), as
required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA).
Under
NEPA, DOE is required to analyze the environmental and socio economic
impacts of any proposed actions. The NEPA processes allows for public
participation, by including two public comment periods.
Scoping
period. The first comment period is before the full plan has been
written. DOE releases a notice of intent in which it suggests its plan
as well as alternatives. This scoping period” is finished. DOE received over 14,000 comments in opposition to their plan.
Comment
period. DOE releases a draft document, which analyzes their proposal as
well as alternatives, and receives a second round of comments.
Final
Document. Once comment period closes, DOE reviews all public comment
and finalize its document. DOE has announced that the final document
will be completed in August 2008. However, this deadline is not firm,
and will likely slip.
Record of Decision: The Secretary of
Energy then issues a Record of Decision, which determines the plans.
DOE has announced that the ROD is will be released in September of 2008.

by tammy thompson on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 | | Sign us, the US up for nuclear reprocessing or the proverbial phrase “recycling” when: It is proven beyond a shadow of a doubt safe and that the public, employees and environmental will not be considered collateral damage in the name of economic development a.k.a. capitalism at it’s worst so far to date; Bring it on when the heads of these corporations will for once be accountable, responsible and trustworthy and eliminate all possibilities of their truthiness(Stephan Colbert); Do it when it is a fact to be cost effective and efficient with no chance of proliferation whatsoever; Move forward with operations when they, the CEOs; DOE and all their promoters and supporters aren’t asking for bail outs and willing to test pilot these ideas and theories in their own immediate backyards at which time they would have to physically reside and work at these proposed facilities 24/7; When it’s no risk at all of proliferation; then and only then should these notions of “recycling” in our communities ever come up for consideration.
Facts must come first; not some proposal of we might do this, that or the other techniques that’s yet to be determined; and not sure where yet but we’ll keep you posted?
Ask all the guys promoting these theories where they reside. Then ask why you weren’t publicly notified on the air waves in the papers etc. could it be because they don’t want you to hear all their unjustifiable ideas of putting us; all of U.S. at risk for their personal financial gain. Stick it in your area first and be sure to let us know how it goes.
Then ask if you did happen to get information on the hearings where was Homeland Security, the EPA, anyone from the Bush administration or just one of the heads of these promoting multi billion/trillion dollar organizations why aren’t they at the hearing for their comments? Where are independent studies or documentation proving this is safe?
Do you honestly think that if they were honest with the public and told them or their employees that the risk of cancer to you and your children would significantly increase?
That the government would be sincere in their promises to the private sector for mining uranium that they would be compensated or how about all the water supplies that still remain contaminated to this day, then there’s all the radioactive and contaminated gypsum piles etc. left to become airborne and potentially move into the ground water, possibly your property land or lungs? Lastly is there a safe place to store and of spent rods etc. yet? Can water and land really be cleaned/mitigated after contamination?
If anyone in Illinois really knew the facts they would’ve never agreed to allow it here; did we even get a fair chance to express our views? Use your voice and make your choice; “NO” not in my town community or country until you do what’s right which still remains to be seen, just confirm this fact with residents in Braidwood, Godley. Facts first please. Sincerely; Ill and annoyed in Illinois.
